Public Relations/Communications Manager

Reports to: Director, Newsroom and Community Content

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Public Relations/Communications Manager will develop, implement, monitor and manage United Way of Greater Cleveland’s communications, public relations and media relations campaigns to increase the visibility and understanding of United Way’s brand, mission and business model in coordination with the Director, Newsroom and Community Content. This position will be responsible for the development and execution of internal and external communications and public relations initiatives and campaigns.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS / KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Identify, plan, organize, promote and execute a year-round public relations strategy, developing and maintaining media relationships and identifying new opportunities for public relations activities to enhance the perception of United Way of Greater Cleveland (United Way) in the community and among other targeted audiences.

  • Prepare internal and external communications, ensuring accuracy and timeliness, including op-eds, press releases, speaking points, campaign materials, speeches, presentations and more.

  • Ensure effective communications with employees on organizational initiatives, issues and updates.

  • Work cross functionally, to identify internal communications opportunities to integrate in  United Way’s owned (blog and social media), paid (advertising) and earned (news coverage) communications channels.

  • Innovate new methods of broadening awareness and understanding of United Way in the communities we serve.

  • Position leadership team as thought leaders in the community through speaking engagements, panel involvement, media placement, etc.

  • Expand and streamline the current media relations processes and protocols to best prepare United Way leadership and staff members for media interviews, providing structure, logistical considerations, key messages and trends, as well as identifying reporter styles and methods.

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with media personnel to be the go-to resource for critical stories related to the organization – ultimately building awareness and positioning United Way as a leader in community.

  • Maintain comprehensive understanding of United Way to position organization for best results and coverage and ability to respond to data and insight requests.

  • Author position statements and key messages for controversial issues, Community Impact projects/initiatives and Resource Development trends for media, governance volunteers, staff members.

  • Create and execute proactive and reactive media relations plans and press materials for United Way’s Community Impact work, annual campaign events, major gifts, crisis communications and all other relevant information.

  • Represents United Way and cultivates relationships with media contacts and sponsors, ensuring proper follow-through to assure excellent customer relations.

  • Monitors public relations efforts, creates and prepares reports, analyzes and interprets data and suggests strategy improvements.

  • Establish metrics to report effectiveness of internal communications initiatives 

  • Manages sensitive issues and crisis communications

  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date media list, including print, radio, magazine, online and television.

  • Assists in training staff on United Way’s brand and key messages.

  • Creates, monitors and manages budgets for public relations activities.

  • Assists with the development of communications plans by audience, product and channel.

  • Assists with the annual report and compilation of success stories.

  • Attends United Way functions as primary United Way media liaison, some of which may be after normal working hours.

  • Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, including three to five years’ experience in public relations, communications, marketing or advertising.

  • Experience in messaging development and communications management.

  • Excellent writing skills.

  • Strong working knowledge of AP Style

  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and organizational skills.

  • Self starter with high degree of initiative and ability to complete assignments with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to serve as organizational spokesperson.

  • Maintain discretion with confidential information.
